I first got the idea of this picture in the autumn of 2018, and took a couple of test shots with Linhof Technika 6x9, but weather wasn't conducive to a good photograph in the course of our five day stay, and the same turned out to be true during a trip up in March of the following year.

Coming back in June for a couple of weeks I was hopeful but, again, the weather wasn't having it. Then around 8pm one evening at the end of a rather wet and windy day the weather started unexpectedly to clear from the west. I hurriedly packed up my Lindhof Kardan GT 4x5 camera, and run (to the extent one can run with a nearly 20kg bag) up to the vantage point in the knowledge I had about 1/2 hour to take this shot.

At the end I had just enough time to take four shots at two different focal lengths, this (the better) one was taken with Schneider-Kreuznach Symmar 5.6/150mm lens. I used the camera movements to get the forerground sharpness. The film used was Fomapan 100, later developed in Fomadon Excel 1+1.

The print is on Fomabrom Variant 112, using split grade printing technique, plus some doging and burning, all in all five separate exposures at multiple grades, developed in Bromophen and lightly selenium toned. The picture here is a scan of a 8x10 test print.

This picture has received a commendation in the monochrome category of the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year 2019.
